Newborn sessions work best in the first 14 days after birth. After that, babies become more alert and less likely to settle into the curled poses that define the classic newborn look. We know that booking a photography session is not the first thing on a new parent's mind in those early days, so we recommend making a provisional booking during the third trimester and confirming the date once the baby arrives.
Why the first 14 days matter ¶
In the first two weeks, newborns spend most of their time in a deep sleep state that allows for gentle repositioning. They are also still flexible enough to settle naturally into curled positions without any forcing. After about 14 days, sleep cycles shorten and babies become more reactive to handling. Sessions are still possible after this window, but the style of photography shifts toward awake and interactive rather than the settled, wrapped look.
How the studio is set up for newborns ¶
The studio is kept at around 26 to 27 degrees Celsius during newborn sessions, which is warmer than our standard portrait temperature. We use a small space heater near the shooting area and a white noise machine to help with settling. Props are minimal: mostly cotton wraps in neutral tones, a small wooden bowl, and a few simple blankets. We do not use elaborate composite setups.
Safety during posing ¶
Every pose we use is one we have practised and are confident is safe. We do not attempt poses that require the baby to support their own head or that put pressure on the spine. If a baby is unsettled in a particular position, we move on. We would rather have 15 beautiful images than 30 images that required pushing a baby past their comfort.
What parents should bring ¶
Bring a change of clothes for yourself, a feeding cover if you use one, and any small personal items you would like included in a few shots (a toy, a pair of tiny shoes, a family heirloom). Feed the baby just before leaving home if possible. A full, sleepy baby settles much faster than a hungry one. The session typically runs two to three hours including feeding and settling time.
